The Sheffield Story:
World-famous Sheffield knives are made in the town of Sheffield, located in South Yorkshire, England. Sheffield has been in existence for centuries and has been renowned for its knife production since the 1400’s. It was the main center of cutlery production in Europe by the 1600’s, and became even more prestigious with the inventions of crucible steel and silver plating in the 1700’s. After these discoveries, which vastly improved the quality of steel, Sheffield became the standard of quality against which other knife manufacturers were held.
There was not initially a central factory for producing knives; all work was done by members of a guild who worked out of their own shops. This is why Sheffield knives bear the name of the knife maker as well as the “Sheffield, England” stamp. Members of the guild were held to the highest form of craftsmanship; each knife was presented to the guild masters who examined it for imperfections. If a knife passed the scrutiny of the masters then it was deemed perfect. It was this tedious system of quality control that ensured the integrity of the Sheffield reputation.
The knife on this page was made in the late 1800’s by G. Wostenholm and is stamped with the knife maker’s name and “Sheffield, England”.
