The making of Damascus knives is an extremely old art form that has more than one origin. It can be traced back to almost the age of steel and the first blades were seen coming out of Damascus, Syria. The art was almost lost and some say that James Black rediscovere the process of making Damascus steel. James Black created the famous Bowie knife used and made famous by Jim Bowie in the early 1800's. The knife has changed slightly since then but the main description fo a Bowie knife is "any large sheath knife with crossguard and clip point".
