The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) and has the distinction of being the largest rattlesnake in the west. It is one of the 13 species of rattlesnakes found in Arizona. It can grow up to a length of 66 inches, weigh up to 15 pounds, is a very heavy bodied snake and can have a lifespan of 20 years or more, particularly in captivity. They are one of the more aggressive species of rattlesnakes found in Arizona and rarely back down from a confrontation; thus it is responsible for more bites and deaths in the U.S. and Mexico than any other rattlesnake species. However, normally they will coil and rattle a warning before striking. They are primarily a noctural species, thus hunt and ambush their prey at night or early in the morning during the warm summer nights. However it is seasonally diurnal, during the early spring and fall they do move around during the day, and they can go without food for over a year in the wild. Prey is usually small mammals such as mice, prairie dogs, rabbits, etc., along with birds and lizards. Between late October and early March they normally hibernate although occassionally they can be found sunning themselves on the rocks. They live in a wide variety of habitat from desert and mesquite grassland to pine-oak and tropical decidious forests.

The exact body coloration depends upon the habitat that they are found in and the back is lined with dark diamond shapes outlined by a lighter colored scale.  The head has two dark stripes, one on either side that run from the eyes to the snakes jaws.  The tail resembles a racoons tail with black and white bands alternating just above it's rattles.  The older a snake gets the more faded the diamondback pattern gets which helps it blend into it's environment.

Our fully lined holster is made of 2 pieces 5-6 oz leather nap sides laminated together, smooth in/smooth out which creates a stronger holster that holds its shape better.  High quality nylon thread is used for durability in the stitching of all our leather products.
