John M. Marlin worked in the Colt plant in Hartford, CT during the Civil War and in 1870 he created his own company in New Haven, CT. Initially he made a line of revolvers and derringers. With the help of a team of outstanding inventors he was able to develop breakthrough and enduring models of rifles some of which are still made today.
The Marlin Model 1881, was one of the earliest large caliber, lever action repeating rifles. The Marlin Company created the "Marlin Safety" the first side-ejecting, solid-top receiver in 1889. Safety was the primary philosophy of the company at it's creation and a concept that has been carried on and demonstrated from the 19th century thru today. When John Marlin died in 1901, his sons took over the business and began diversifying the company.
In 1915, during World War I, a New York syndicate acquired the company and it's name became the "Marlin Rockwell Corporation". During World War I the company improved and manufactured the M1895 Colt-Browning machine gun which was an aircraft model synchronized to fire through the propeller. They became one of the largest machine gun producers in the world for the US and its Allies with the M1895 Colt-Browning and a later model variation called the "Marlin Gun".
Marlin Rockwell bought out the Hopkins & Allen Arms Company in 1917 to promote a largely expanded line of fireamrs which helped create the image of the Marlin Company as makers of "sporting firearms." Sold in 1923 the Marlin Firearms Co., of North Haven, CT is currently a manufacturer of high power, center fire, lever action, and .22 caliber rimfire rifles. Marlin currently owns the firearm manufacturer H & R Firearms, and is owned by Remington Arms.
*Annie Oakley was a Marlin user. A special Model 1889 was made for her. This model was a lever action 22 repeater (currently the Model 39) and became the favorite of many exhibition shooters.
