Conchos come from the Mexican vaqueros and were used for both function and decoration. Originally made from silver dollars that were hammered flat, then stamped and edged before cutting slots into them so they could be strung together on a piece of leather. Saddle skirts were secured in this manner to the saddle tree when used with a leather rosette with slits to create a snug attachment. Eventually the concho started to be added not only to saddles for function but for decoration on bridles, chaps, gunbelts, hats and much more.

The styles eventually evolved to include the solid style concho with either a screw style or rivet back which is used mainly for decoration and seen more often than the original slotted concho. Conchos are available in a wide variety of designs they are commonly silver in color and made of white bronze or a similar metal.
